Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common pulmonary diseases worldwide. A simulation study will show how implantation of wire loops in pathological lung tissue can change the gas distribution in relation to the compartments within three years. For this purpose, the implementation of a study is presented to confirm the evidence of lung volume reduction (LVR) with an accompanying reduction in pendulum air. In the course, a lung simulator was used to simulate the clinical picture of COPD and to mimic the effect of wire loops by changing resistance and compliance over time. In the analysis, a model was found that describes the course of the pendulum airway during three years of treatment. In addition, a second model can be used to predict the development of pendulum air up to a period of six years after the start of treatment. The results suggest that treatment success already occurs in the first third of the treatment period. In addition, changes in the respiratory gas flow and the pressure curve were observed. The results of the simulation study suggest that timely initiation of treatment for LVR leads to optimal outcomes for patient well-being.
